They can change colors from one season to the next and send out latest offsets or "chicks" in the spring through summer growing season. Chicks can be left on the mother "hen" to form a cluster or removed and transplanted.

Once established, Sempervivum are drought and frost tolerant. They thrive in sunny locations, with afternoon shade if temperatures exceed 80F. Plant in-ground or in containers with drainage holes and use a gritty, well-draining soil. Sempervivum need protection from heavy rains (particularly in winter) and they are happiest thrive through wintering under an insulating blanket of snow. They will take deep waterings if the weather is sizzling and dry, but need time for the soil to completely dry before being re-watered.
